Telecommunications Safety Hazards Mitigation

Written by Safety Jake | Dec 1, 2020 9:11:14 PM

It's hard to imagine a world without telecommunications. The telecommunications industry is an essential facet of modern life, enabling companies to communicate efficiently and maintain a high customer service level. Now more than ever, there is a demand for people to connect and collaborate seamlessly regardless of their location—remote or local.

Telecommunications safety and health risks

Workplace injuries in the telecommunications industry can be challenging for even some of the most qualified and skilled professionals to avoid. Some of the most common safety hazards that workers in this industry face are due to:

  • Falling from heights
  • Microwave and RF radiation (non-ionizing radiation)
  • Electrocution
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals
  • Extreme weather conditions (e.g., wind, cold, heat, cold)

Telecommunications safety requires an understanding that the industry is ever-changing—having many different training requirements and disciplines. Establishing a 'safety positive' culture within the workplace is just as important as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Implementing safety training, workplace inspections, and safety reporting are critical components of reducing workplace injuries.

Mitigate Risk with PPE

Safety equipment and PPE are an integral part of any telecommunications worker's gear list.

Keep telecommunications workers safe with:

  • Approved and compliant eyewear and head protection.
  • Eye washing facilities or portable equipment for eye flushing.
  • Footwear made of leather or other equally firm material which have features such as steel toe-capped and non-slip soles.
  • Fall protection equipment such as travel restraining, fall arrest, work positioning, and fall restriction systems.
  • Hearing protection for workers exposed to work areas where the noise level exceeds 85db.
  • High-visibility clothing for work environments such as roadways and thoroughfares—or work performed at night.
  • Implementing traffic protection such as barricades, barriers, highly visible warning signs, and street closures when necessary.

Safety equipment and PPE are the foundation of risk mitigation in the telecommunications industry. When selecting PPE, it is vital to procure equipment suitable to the residual risk(s) and meet the specific user—taking into account the fit, size, and weight of the PPE.
